On Friday the 3rd of September at 10.00, Professor John Cook, Learning Technology Research Institute, London Metropolitan University presents:
"Mobile Phones as Mediating Tools Within Augmented Contexts for
Development"

Abstract
The nature of learning is being enhanced by mobile devices and the
networks and media to which they connect people. Consequently, in my talk I argue for the need to reexamine approaches to the design of and research into learning experiences that incorporate mobile/cell phones in the learning context. Following an overview of ‘mobile learning’, I advance my argument by describing two initiatives.

Firstly, Design Research is presented as an approach that tends to have interventionist characteristics, is process oriented and contributes to theory building.

Secondly, I describe an educational problem that mobile learning tries to solve, namely the design of Augmented Contexts for Development (Cook, 2009a); these place context as a core construct that enables collaborative, location-based, mobile device mediated problem solving where learners generate their own ‘temporal context for development’; a case study (CONTSENS) is used to reify this Vygotskian-oriented initiative. I then go on to further argue that our understanding of how to design for these new augmented contexts can benefit from a re-examination
of Design Research. The seminar will address questions such as:  -what does the shift in the use of mobile devices for informal, formal and work-based learning mean for the collection and analysis of data and what methods might we employ in a systematic, iterative and interventionist Design Research effort?

As technology develops and evolves it changes what we can do and where we can do it. People change work, learning, and entertainment practices on account of technology. Technology in support of teaching and learning is no different. This is especially true when the Internet, social media and distributed and mobile technologies are taken into consideration. These emerging technological landscapes are starting to transform the ways in which we teach and learn.

Currently, numerous scholars claim that the majority of educational institutions ignore the overwhelming presence that mobile technologies and social media have in children’s and young people’s life and argue that these technological developments might be integrated into everyday educational practices since they are transforming and defining literate acts and language in profound ways that affect learning. Thus, a crucial challenge for the educational community is to provide teachers and educators with tools and methods that can help them in their efforts to cope with the changes that these new technological developments introduce to our society.

Bahtijar (Bato) Vogel, PhD student in Media Technology at LNU, has presented a long paper at the /6th IEEE International Conference WMUTE 2010/ that took place on April 12th-16th in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Bato´s contribution (see reference below) has won the best PhD studentpaper award. Vogel, B., Spikol, D., Kurti, A, & Milrad, M. (2010). Integrating Mobile,Web and Sensory Technologies to Support Inquiry-Based Science Learning.Proceedings of the /6th IEEE International Conference on Wireless, Mobileand Ubiquitous Technologies in Education /(WMUTE) 2010 held in Kaohsiung,Taiwan, April 12-16th, 2010.
We at CeLeKT are very proud of getting for the 3rd time in less than one yearthe /“best paper award”/ at an international scientific conference. In July last year,PhD student Martin Svensson got the best paper award (in all categories) at the/9th IEEE International Conference ICALT 2009/ and Anna Wingkvist receivedthe best PhD student paper award at /mLearn 2009/.

Norbert Pachler, one of the author of the book entitled " Mobile Learning. structures, agency and practices" published in 2010 by Springer visits K2lab/Stockholm University on the 1st of June. He will give a talk on the notion of a socio-cultural ecology of mobile learning in the morning and will discuss his book on mobile learning with LEAF- Ph D candidates in the afternoon.

Norbert Pachler's seminar  will  present key aspects of the work of the London Mobile Learning Group¹s work on the notion of a socio-cultural ecology of mobile learning and discusses the social and cultural processes that govern the relationship between learners and - with a focus on the role of mobile devices - the tools they use for the semiotic activity that is learning, the contexts for learning, the interaction of the different variables in an ecosystem allow for and generate, as well as in the structural relationships embedded in cultural ecologies between informal (life-world) and formal (educational institution) sites for and of learning.

Bio. Mag. phil. Dr. phil. Norbert Pachler is Reader in Education at the Institute of Education, University of London (www.ioe.ac.uk <http://www.ioe.ac.uk>).

Dear all,

We are arranging the Virtual Meeting for PhD students. This was planned in the LEAF kick-off meeting in Stockholm last November.

The meeting shall serve as an arena for PhD students within the LEAF network to exchange ideas about research methods and theories.

The suggested agenda is
- Round-the-table introduction and brief update of current work
- Discussion about research and evaluation methods, and learning theories applied in your research
- Experiences on user studies, lessons learned, and challenges
- Setting agenda and board for the next meeting
Other suggestions for the agenda are appreciated (see the registration form)
Please fill out the registration form to confirm attendance. This is also to share little information about your self and your research with others.

The meeting will take place on one of the following dates: 15th, 20th, or 21st of April. Please indicate the dates that fits your schedule in the form. Time will be from 13:30 till 15:30. Please submit the form by Monday, the 12th of April.

Please forward this message to other PhD students within the LEAF network.
We apologize for the delay in organizing the e-meeting and we hope that you all will participate.

Kind regards,
Ilaria and Mamdouh
