Content:

The course consists of discussing the book “Mobile Learning: Structures, Agency, Practices” written by Pachler, Bachmair and Cook published this year by Springer. The book provides the readers with 15 chapters that are organized into the following three parts: Big picture and examples; Mobile devices as resources for learning Socio-cultural ecological analysis of the mobile complex; Perspectives for Mobile learning. The book covers among others, core issues in mobile learning, mobile devices as educational resources, socioeconomic approaches to mobile learning, scenarios promoting mobile learning, ubiquitous mobility and its implications for pedagogy, and the digital divide.

Summary of the Research Programme

The aim of network is to strengthen interdisciplinary high-quality research and further develop an on-going research effort supported by a seed money grant from NordForsk in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). The Learning Ecosystems and Activities of the Future (LEAF) is a research initiative that brings together eight research groups from four Nordic countries (Sweden Finland, Norway and Denmark). These groups encompass an area of scientific research related to the interdisciplinary field of Technology Enhanced Learning with special emphasis on mobile technologies and the fields of Learning sciences and Human computer interaction. These fields focus strongly on both rethinking pedagogic curricula from the opportunities that mobile technologies bring up to education and, redesigning mobile technologies taking account of specific learning and social goals defined in educational curricula.

THE WORKSHOP Learning Ecosystems and Activities of the Future (LEAF) 11th and 12th of February 2009. The objectives of the workshop were:
o To further develop the LEAF initiative and the opportunities to express support to it.
o To set up a strategy to advance collaboration between the Nordic research groups and agencies.
o To identify mutual objectives of the LEAF.
o Identify funding opportunities for this initiative.

LEAF Kick-off meeting x.10.2009. The place of the meeting was  DSV- Isafjordsgatan 39, Kista. The objectives of the kick-off meeting were:

  1. -to explore which are the research studies our groups are currently conducting and which kinds of collaborative studies could we plan together in the near future?
  2. What kinds of papers could our research groups write together?
  3. Which are the interesting conferences and international journals for our research network?
  4. What are your thoughts about co-supervision of doctoral students, development of content to new Ph D courses and creation of a Nordic Research Graduate School?
  5. How to develop a strategy  to advance collaboration between us, the Nordic research agencies and the industry? What are the funding opportunities to support our research network?

About this course: 

Current advancements in wireless and sensors technologies combined with the rapid adoption of sophisticated mobile multimedia devices and applications have created new social software tools for people to connect and interact; therefore changing the ways we communicate and collaborate.
Mobile users are now creating and sharing increasing amounts of media content, thus generating large volumes of rich data sets. This latest fact indicates that social mobile media is about to become an integral component of distributed environments and applications of the mobile web.
